Segregation is practiced in all aspects of daily life: prohibition of inter-racial marriages, separation of buses, schools, or places of residence. Condemned by the United Nations as a crime against humanity, the policy of apartheid grew stronger in the 1970s. As a nation, South Africa finds itself ostracized from civilized society, while the world mobilizes for the release of Nelson Mandela, the black leader who has been languishing in prison since 1962. In 1990, the system of apartheid, which separated people by the color of their skin, collapses after decades of protest and a series of negotiations between the ANC and the de Klerk government. This results in South Africa's first non-racial elections, which were won by the African National Congress of Nelson Mandela amid growing domestic and international pressure and the fear of a dangerous racial civil war.
