The Twitter account of Danielle Stella, Ilhan Omar's Republican opponent, @2020MNCongress, has been permanently suspended. Danielle Stella's Twitter page displays: "Account suspended. Twitter suspends accounts which violate the Twitter Rules". Twitter's move to suspend the campaign account comes as the social media giant has made efforts over the years to toughen its polices on hate speech and abusive behavior. On a webpage outlining its rules, the platform said "violence, harassment and other similar types of behavior discourage people from expressing themselves, and ultimately diminish the value of global public conversation." "Our rules are to ensure all people can participate in the public conversation freely and safely," it adds. In a statement, Twitter told the Guardian: "The account was permanently suspended for repeated violations of the Twitter Rules." Danielle Stella, a pro-Trump Republican candidate for Congress, posted two tweets involving the idea of Omar being hanged, according to the Washington Times, which broke the story of her suspension. One of Danielle Stella's posts featured 'stick figure hanging from gallows'. "My opponent, Ilhan, wants to bring in more illegal immigrants and refugees, when we have American citizens (men, women and children), and heroic Veterans suffering in homelessness.", Danielle Stella commented in one of her attacks. The comments appear to refer to unfounded allegations picked up by right-wing media sites that Ms Omar, one of the first Muslim women to be elected to Congress, had passed sensitive information to Iran via Qatar. The allegations were made by a Kuwaiti-born Canadian businessman, Alan Bender, who was giving evidence in the trial of Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad al-Thani. The Qatari emir's brother stands accused of ordering his American bodyguard to murder two people, and of holding an American citizen hostage.
