Country-wide protests that began Friday and spread quickly across at least 100 Iranian cities and towns have killed more that 100 people. At the beginning of the week the government still thought it could calm the public, but now the leadership seems to realize that it’s facing the threat of an all-out civil insurrection over rising fuel prices and economic hardship. The government has shut down the internet, creating a blackout that has greatly impeded the flow of information among protest groups and between them and the outside world. Protesters burned banks and government offices, damaged schools of Islamic studies, and chanted slogans demanding "death to Rohani, death to Khamenei."
