Why liberal education is important in America. At a time when America has a leader who seems to be steering the country through a thick cloud of uncertainty with the GPS turned off, we are realizing how important is liberal education. Liberal education empowers individuals and prepares them to deal with complexity, diversity, and change. It provides people with broad knowledge of the wider world (science, culture, society etc.) A liberal education is a broad exposure to the outlines of knowledge. Liberal education teaches you to think critically and act consequently. Liberal education teaches you how to learn, how to acquire knowledge. It teaches how to read: peruse an idea or concept closely, find new sources, compare them, search for additional data, sift through so as to prove or disprove a hypothesis and make well-balanced decisions. When brutes like Trump -- with no understanding of how and why the world's economies, societies, cultures are interconnected and interdependent -- hold the highest position of the executive branch of government, it results in chaotic fiascos like the the one Trump's policies have created in international and national affairs and trade. Trump's lack of broad mindedness and analytical thinking is the reason why he has failed the biggest test of his life: the handling of the coronavirus. Let's compare South Korea and the US handling of the pandemic. The responses to coronavirus displayed by the US and South Korea have been polar opposites. Within a week of its first confirmed case, South Korea's disease control agency had summoned 20 private companies to the medical equivalent of a war-planning summit and told them to develop a test for the virus at lightning speed. A week after that, the first diagnostic test was approved and went into battle, identifying infected individuals who could then be quarantined to halt the advance of the disease. The nation of more than 50 million people has almost won the coronavirus war. To date, the country has 10,702 cases and only 240 deaths. The other country, America, dithered and procrastinated, became mired in chaos and confusion, was distracted by the ignorant conceit of its leader, and is now confronted by a health emergency of daunting proportions. To date, America has 880,204 cases and more than 49,845 deaths, with a daily average of almost 3,000 deaths.
