Rick Steves is a travel writer, author, activist and television personality known for his travel series on PBS. 'Rick Steves Europe' travel guide made him a multi-millionaire. He saw the need for cheap housing as a young backpacker in Europe, where he slept on trains and in church pews. "How else would a white, middle-class American kid gain a firsthand appreciation for the value of a safe and comfortable place to sleep?", he comments about the experience. The travel guru has a heart of gold. Early in 2017, he gave the YWCA a building complex in Seattle that helps homeless women and children to stay for free. It's a $4 million apartment complex that he purchased back in 2015 intending to give it away. The building was named 'Trinity Place'. It has all the amenities and atmosphere that are necessary for single mothers recovering from addictions. The help and support is provided by the YWCA and Rotary Club to get the women back on their feet and to provide a caring environment that they deserve. Steves says that "the gap between rich and poor in our country continues to widen. And I believe needs -- such as affordable housing -- will only increase as budget cuts are implemented." "It's my hope that this project can inspire others to think creatively about how we can make America a more genuinely compassionate place.", he adds.
