Trump has removed the Department of Defense's inspector general, General Glenn Fine, days after he was appointed to oversee the $2 trillion coronavirus relief package. As the acting Pentagon's Inspector General, he had been selected to chair the panel overseeing the relief fund by an independent federal watchdog. The president nominated Mr. Jason Abend for the position of DoD Inspector General and designated Mr. Sean W. O’Donnell, who is the Environmental Protection Agency Inspector General, to serve as the Acting DoD IG in addition to his current duties at the EPA. Before his work at the Pentagon, General Fine spent 11 years in the inspector general’s role at the Justice Department. His work there included reports on President George W. Bush's firing of four U.S. Attorneys and on politically driven hirings in the department's civil rights division. His audits also included one in 2010 alleging FBI misuses of national security letters to obtain telephone records. This is the latest in a series of steps Trump has taken to confront government watchdogs tasked with oversight of the executive branch. He is taking aim at inspector generals he considers insufficiently loyal. In the past four days, Trump has fired one inspector general tied to his impeachment, castigated another he felt was overly critical of the coronavirus response and sidelined a third meant to safeguard against wasteful spending of funds for businesses in economic distress. The American government was supposed to be structured in a way that checks and balances will prevent these types of corrupt acts. However, the GOP-led senate has refused to exercise this role, preferring to operate in coordination with a corrupt president who is now running the country as his private family business. The Republican party has become so corrupt that its high ranking members are all working together to rob the country blind. It has become a very powerful engine through which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men are being enabled to subvert the power of the people, usurp for themselves the reins of government and destroy all the democratic institutions of the Republic.
